When the borad decides how much it wants to pay out to its long suffering share holders say £2 Billion in your example its still a meaningless figure until you can divide the payout by the total number of shares in circulation and get an idea of xp per share that is what im trying to get at .Its the say £2Billion divided by the importent bit the total number of ordinary shares in circulation that gives you the final divi price ...i agree the divi will go up and down depending how big the profits pot is but the number of shares will be constant until there is anouther rights issue etc.
